Algebra I

Systems by Elimination

Add the two equations so one variable disappears.

Concept

Cancel a variable, then back-substitute

Two equations, two unknowns. If the coefficients of one variable are opposites, adding the equations erases that variable and leaves a one-variable equation.

Solve for what remains, then substitute back into either original equation to get the other variable.

(x + y) + (x − y) = 2x
