Linear Algebra

Determinants (2×2)

One number measuring area scaling — and invertibility.

Concept

ad − bc

The determinant tells you the factor by which the matrix scales area, with sign recording orientation flips.

If det = 0 the transformation collapses the plane onto a line, information is lost, and the matrix has no inverse.

det[a b; c d] = ad − bc
